Grand National diet: How does a jockey lose weight and keep in shape during races?

The Grand National is the best-known jump racing event in the calendar and it takes place in Aintree, Liverpool.

While many of us just think about the horses in the races, others don’t think about the fitness regime the jockeys have to undertake to get into shape.

So how does a jockey keep fit during the races?

We spoke to Brit star Lizzie Kelly who exclusively revealed her regime.

“I exercise more to keep in shape and don’t follow a strict diet”

The 26-year-old told Daily Star Online: “I exercise more to keep in shape and don’t follow a strict diet.

“But typically, I might have a boiled egg in the morning, soup at lunch and salmon with spinach and quinoa in the evening.

“I am very active, riding out on horses three or four times a day. I also do a lot of running to stay in shape.

“If I need to lose weight in a short period of time for a race I will go on a long run with lots of layers on.”

She added: “I will go on a 45-minute run two to three times a week. I don’t do weight training as I don’t want to get too heavy.

“But my training generally focuses on the four key areas required in horse training – cardio, core, balance and legs. I need to stay lean to make weight.”

The three-day racing event started yesterday and will finish tomorrow.

The first day is known as Grand National Thursday, followed by Ladies Day on Friday and ends with Grand National Day.

More than 150,000 racegoers are expected to attend the three-day racing event.

Meanwhile, if you want tickets you could buy them directly from The Jockey Club website.

Today, we revealed the Ladies Day fashion, with five guests rocking up in the same frock.

The £70 Pretty Little Thing ensemble took the Grand National by storm.

Lizzie Kelly teamed up with Binky Felstead and Chessie King to participate in a jockey-inspired fitness class.

The trio came together for the 45-minute Jockey Fit session at UN1T London on Tuesday.
