Walking for weight loss: How to lose one pound a week by walking 30 minutes a day

Embarking on a weight loss journey when you have a 9-5 job can be daunting.

But there is one activity which most of us can fit into our daily lives – walking.

Walking is an easy, free and low impact form of exercise which is great for losing weight.

To lose weight you have to take in fewer calories than you are burning.

If you do this your body will start burning the stored energy, or fat.

To lose weight fast you have to pair it with a healthy diet.

Here’s how to lose a pound a week by walking 30 minutes a day.

Walking for 30 minutes can burn anywhere from between 90 to 200 calories.

Denise Miklasz, personal trainer at Northwestern Medicine Crystal Lake Health & Fitness Centre, told Popsugar: “The intensity at which you walk plays a key role in helping your body burn more calories and improve your cardiorespiratory system.”

So a casual stroll won’t do it, but Denise recommends including “30 to 60-second bursts of faster walking every three to five minutes, followed by a 30-second recovery walk”.

Or you could add weights or add an incline.

The NHS recommends a balanced diet of 2,500 calories a day to maintain weight, while it’s 2,000 a day for women.
