Kylie Jenner Is Getting Mum-Shamed For Doing This

Judging by the recent headlines, you might have assumed Beyoncé was the only celebrity present at Coachella. #Beychella #BowDown #StillCrying

Apparently, Kylie Jenner was also at the music festival, and wow did people care—but not for any normal reason. Some corners of the internet were shocked that the 20-year-old new mum (who gave birth to daughter Stormi Webster in February) would leave the house and have a fun, solo weekend.

Drama started pretty much as soon as Kylie posted a pre-Coachella selfie to Instagram. Sporting a long, highlighter pink wig, she borrowed her caption from Mean Girls: “I’m not a regular mom, I’m a cool mom.” Some of her followers praised the look; others argued that cool mums do not leave their infants two months after birth.

She followed up that shot with a picture of herself sipping from a Solo cup alongside a dude who appears to be Travis Scott (Kylie’s partner and father of her child, Stormi).

On Twitter, Kylie cops are calling privilege on the new mum for leaning heavily on hired staff to parent her daughter.

“Kylie Jenner’s at Coachella like she doesn’t have a newborn at home,” one Twitter user wrote, prompting another to comment: “Must be nice to have everything done for you so you can just chell it up.”

Others were just shocked that she would be gone from her baby so soon after giving birth.

That same “stay at home with your kid” expectation does not seem to hold for Travis, who does not seem to be getting shamed for his parenting decisions.

Yes, okay, it’s probably true that Kylie does have a pricey support team on call to help with the care of her daughter. (She also has a very present “momager” on call, in the form of one Kris Jenner.) But new parents, regardless of net worth, deserve to call in a babysitter to take some space from their kids on occasion, and as such, some tweeters came to Kylie’s defense.

“From what I’ve seen today is the only time I’ve seen her go to an event that would take her away from Stormi for a period of time,” one fan commented, in response to one mom’s open question about separation anxiety. “I don’t think it’s that big a deal.”

“Why are people so mad Kylie went to Coachella because she had a baby,” another wondered. “I’m not Kardashian/Jenner minion but give the girl a break. People are literally so obsessed with what other people do with their lives it’s insane.”

Other fans were quick to point out that—despite her perennial love for the festival—Kylie was in fact working the event, doing a publicity appearance for her cosmetics line, Kylie Cosmetics.

None of this backlash is particularly surprising, though: The Kardashian-Jenner clan has a special talent for polarizing the internet with even the most innocuous actions. Khloe got slammed for doing doctor-approved exercises while pregnant; Kourtney got criticized for letting her 5-year-old daughter play with (apparently temporary) hair dye; Kim recently got lectured for posting a sort-of topless photo taken by her daughter, North.

And while some of the content this family posts is undeniably tone deaf—recall Kim’s Fulani braids, attributed to Bo Derrick—Kylie’s decision to take a day trip doesn’t make the list.

But, as always, all the controversy seems to have affected the new mum not at all. She’s still out there, doing Kylie.
