Rachael Taylor Reveals The One Health “Fad” She’s Actually A Fan Of

A quick scroll through Rachael Taylor’s Instagram and a Netflix binge of the Jessica Jones and The Defenders series she stars in is enough to have us lacing up some boxing gloves and hitting the pads.

Yep, this 33-year-old actor and Neutrogena brand ambassador is serious #fitspo.

We chat to the kick-arse Aussie export about the exercise routine that gets her fighting fit and how she keeps her flawless skin in that state.

What’s your relationship been like with your skin as you’ve grown up?

Like most teens, I had my fair share of troublesome skin. As I got older, I grew to understand the importance of good, simple products that work, and not over complicating my skincare routine with too many steps or products. Every now and then I can be critical, we all can, we’re human, but overall, I’m happy with the skin I’ve got. You’ve just go to find what works for you and stick to it.

What’s does your skincare regime involve now?

In the morning, I start off using the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Cleanser to get my skin ready for the creams and makeup I’m about to put on. I then lather on a moisturiser with an SPF like the Hydro Boost Water Gel to compliment the cleanser, and then a standalone SPF50 sunscreen – this is a nonnegotiable for me! With makeup, I need to use something lightweight and invisible so I use the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Fluid – it’s so thin, I’m obsessed!

In the evening, I keep it simple again, but I switch up my cleansers to ensure I remove every bit of makeup. I use the Hydro Boost Gelee Milk with a cotton pad, it’s gentle and easy to use, even removing my heavy makeup. I then finish it off with a moisturiser again.  

Have you picked up any tips from your time in the makeup chair on set?

Absolutely – my approach to makeup has changed entirely; it shouldn’t be about covering up the skin but rather enhancing what you already have.

What are the beauty products you can’t live without?

Concealer! I really love Cle De Peau. It’s expensive but it lasts forever! You only need a little bit.

What does your day on a plate look like?

I don’t necessarily follow a diet and I don’t deprive myself of anything!

For breakfast, I’ll start with a herbal tea, perhaps green or dandelion, then will have either some fruit and yogurt, maybe a Bircher muesli. I’ll have a coffee mid-morning and a snack – maybe some rice cakes with avocado. Lunch is usually a wrap packed with veggies and protein or a bowl with brown rice and salad and protein and avocado, just you know, the kitchen sink really, whatever is around, I eat quite a lot of rice with olive oil and lemon – it works well for me. I’ll graze through the afternoon on hummus or nuts or a smoothie and dinner is fish and veggies. Dark chocolate will also find its way in there somehow! As will coffee.

What is your regular exercise routine like?

I exercise regularly more for the mental clarity than for anything else! Over time I’ve moved away from gyms and more towards athletic activities. I like to mix up my week between three heavy boxing sessions with my coach, I might break that up with some gentle walking through the park, or a light run here and there and then if I’m feeling really adventurous I might even go for an indoor rock climb! I’m still learning that one. I read it was important to do something you suck at, it’s funny and fun and humbling. I’m gonna try surfing next. Bet I’ll really suck at that!!

Does it change in the lead up to filming, especially with an action-heavy show like Jessica Jones?

I might do a little more weight lifting and stability training just to make sure I don’t get injured for when I’m doing stunts on set, strength is important. We also do a lot of onset training.  I’d say I have a good level of base fitness, I really care about being fit just for my life, so I don’t alter my training too drastically.

Do you like to train with other people or by yourself, and why?

I enjoy training by myself – it gives me some time away from the rest of the world to really just focus on the task at hand.

What health fads have you tried and hated?  

God there’s so much information out there about nutrition it’s really overwhelming! I’m one of the lucky ones as I have managed to avoid most of them. But here’s one I love – Chinese medicine and acupuncture. I guess it’s certainly not a fad – but I’m a believer.
