What It Really Means If You're A Fire Sign

If you’re astro-obsessed (guilty), then chances are, you know your sun, moon, and rising sign like the passcode to your BFF’s phone. Still, even the most loyal of horoscope checkers often don’t know their elemental sign, or if they do (props), what that means. Here’s the astrological sitch: Every zodiac sign falls into one of four categories—fire signs, earth signs, water signs, and air signs—kinda like the Hogwarts houses.

And, like your sun sign, your elemental sign is believed to have certain characteristics that can play into your individual personality. Understanding this sign’s role in your overall chart can even tell you something new and unexpected about yourself (which, let’s be real, is kinda the reason you got into astrology in the first place).

If you’re a fire sign—I’m talking to you, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius—you’re known for having a fiery personality because…duh. But there’s so much more to fire signs than just being hot, hot, hot

What does it mean if you’re a fire sign?

“You are endowed with a killer instinct,” says Rebecca Gordon, a professional astrologer in New York City and author of Your Body and the Stars. While that might sound intense (to, uh, say the least), that really means you have a knack for sensing danger. Fire signs “know when to take a risk and when to lie low,” she explains. So, when in doubt, trust your gut.

And you’re not just a pro at self-preservation. “You ignite the fires in all other members of the zodiac, bringing a spark of joy to those you touch,” Gordon adds. Due to their fiery disposition (pun totally intended), fire signs are always up for adventure, whether that means traveling the world or just taking in the sights of a new neighbourhood.

No matter where you are or what you’re up to, you’ve always got exploration and excitement on the brain. “Experiences, rather than material possessions, are what really lights your fire,” Gordon notes.

To keep your spark alive, you need action, exercise, and a healthy dose of exotic travel. All that pretty much guarantees your life will never get dull, says Gordon.

How does being a fire sign impact the rest of your life?

For starters, you probably won’t thrive in the typical nine-to-five. With constant cravings for inspiration, the same routine day-in and day-out just won’t cut it, Gordon says.

“Fire signs all have a desire to outwardly express themselves in the world,” she adds, “whether it’s through building a new business, being an artist, or even becoming a teacher or author.”

Those aren’t your only job options (obvs, this isn’t an astrological aptitude test), but you’ll definitely want to keep creativity in mind if you find yourself switching career paths.

Ultimately, being a fire sign means “you possess charisma and an intense personal magnetism, which draws the world into your warm glow,” explains Gordon. But before you get too excited (tough, I know), she cautions “to be mindful of burning out and taking your fires too far.”

Your intensity—if gone unchecked—can make you a bit domineering. “Fire is a powerful element and should be handled with intention and care,” advises Gordon. “When you strike the right balance in tending your fire, nothing can stand in your way.”

How do fire signs relate to the other elemental signs?

You know the old saying, “Fight fire with fire”? Yeah…that couldn’t be any less true.

You and your fellow fire signs are destined to become instant besties, feeling a “natural camaraderie”—a spark, if you will. Same goes for meeting someone with fire-sign moons and fire-sign ascendants, says Gordon. “You’re all like cosmic cousins, having similar zodiacal DNA.”

As for the other three signs, you might wanna be a bit more careful. When meeting earth signs, think business first—that’s where you’ll work together best. “The fire sign brings in the creativity and inspiration, while the earth sign knows how to implement and build,” explains Gordon.

With water signs, you’re in for a steamy situation. Expect to have a hot romance (imagine Titanic’s iconic car-sex scene), or work together on an intensive creative project. But it’s not exactly a match made in heaven: “These two have to be careful not to drown or burn each other out,” says Gordon. “It’s a delicate balance.”

When a fire sign encounters an air sign, you’ve met your creative match. You’ll come together in a perfect synergy of ideas, just like the way air fans flames IRL. In fact, says Gordon, “Fire needs air—and air enjoys fire as well.”

What else should fire signs expect going forward?

Good news: Jupiter, the planet of fortune, will transit (a.k.a. cross) Sagittarius, a power move that’ll benefit Aries and Leo as well. Fire signs will have luck this year in the areas of travel, love, personal growth, publishing, broadcasting, and teaching.

Even if you’re not a fire sign (womp womp), just knowing one can help you catch some of the luck they’ll be radiating throughout 2019. Hot damn.
