How bacteria spread in the household

Bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus lives in about a third of the population on the skin, without leading to problems. In some cases, but they are antibiotic resistant and can cause severe-to-treat infections. How staphylococci in the household spread, has now been investigated in detail.

The researchers from the University of Chicago, after extensive research of family members, Pets, and surfaces in the house hold of a well-known wisdom: After using the toilet, before Preparing food, before eating and after Changing diapers, you should be sure to wash your hands with soap and water. People who adhere to it have less staph in the household.

Dogs and cats ütransferred to staphylococci rarely

From households, in which children previously due to staphylococci treated by a physician, were detected in half of the people in a single year in at least one of five samples of multi-resistant staphylococci. Even cats and dogs were examined, but only a third of the Pets, the bacteria were found. "We thought they could be a Reservoir for staphylococci, and a role in the dissemination of play. Our study has shown, however, that cats and dogs get you with greater probability of people as umgekehrt", told Dr. Stephanie A. Fritz, Professor of Pediatrics at the Washington University.

Händewaschen is the best protection

The researchers also took samples of surfaces such as refrigerator door handles, faucets, sink, bed linen and keyboards, and pursued individual staphylococci strains. In the process, they were able to prove that the bacteria not only – how long adopted – Person-to-Person, but also on surfaces are given. They advise, therefore, to share personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes or razors. Instead, prefer washing your hands frequently.
