Be prepared to admire Alex Trebek even more. The Jeopardy! host, who was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in March, sent an encouraging hand-written letter to a fan who was also recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
In a Reddit thread, one user shared that their grandmother, a huge Trebek fan, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last month. So, the Redditor asked the TV star to send their grandma well wishes.
“My grandma was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last month,” the post reads. “Her idol, Alex Trebek, was also recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I wrote to Mr. Trebek asking for some words of encouragement and well wishes. To my complete surprise — he responded! Thank you for taking the time, Mr. Trebek!”
Trebek did not disappoint and sent a photo with a very sweet note that reads, “Karen, let’s you and I decide that we both are going to be cancer survivors. Stay positive. All the best! Alex Trebek.”
Of course, fans love the positive response and the thread has more than one thousand comments.
“Who is…an amazing guy?,” one clever Redditor posted, phrasing the comment in the form of a Jeopardy! answer.
“I like his message. Classy. Not soppy, not fake,” writes another fan.
This week, Trebek released a statement saying that he’s in “near remission” of his advanced pancreatic cancer. According to the report, Trebek’s rumors have shrunk by more than 50 percent.
Trebek’s progress has stunned doctors since only three percent of pancreatic cancer patients are alive five years post diagnosis.
“I’d have to say it’s not so common to see tumor shrinkage like that, but we are seeing this more and more with the chemotherapy regimens that have been developed over the past decade,” Allyson Ocean, MD, medical oncologist at New York-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, previously told Men’s Health.
Early diagnosis is important to survival, and while not every guy exhibits symptoms, it’s important to know the signs to watch out for.
