Long before Kanye West rapped about it in 2011 and well before Ryan Howard remarked to Michael Scott in Season 1 Episode 6 of The Office, “Wow. How many Filet-O-Fishes did you eat?” I’ve loved McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish. Hey, wait! Don’t leave yet! I get it; you think I’m disgusting, but hear me out. It’s not that I’m obsessed solely with McDonald’s deep-fried fish patty sandwiches; it’s just that, back then, the deep-fried fish sandwich slathered with creamy tartar sauce wasn’t as prevalent as it is today. (I was also broke, so there’s that.) But now, years and years later, I no longer have to hide my affinity for fried fish sandwiches. According to DoorDash’s 2019-2020 Trend Report, it’s one of the top 15 foods on the rise for 2020.
DoorDash’s 2019-2020 Trend Report is brimming with interesting facts about this year’s food trends, from the most popular cuisine ordered (Mexican food, including burrito bowls, chicken tacos, bean burritos, and taco salads) and the top 15 most popular orders (“make your own pizza” is No. 4″) to the most memorable foodie moments from 2019 (remember when orders for iced tea spiced 500 percent the day the Mueller Report was released?). But the section that’s caught our eye is the top 15 foods on the rise for 2020.
Coming in at No. 1 is apple pie, which saw a 1,550 percent increase in orders. Cream cheese Rangoons came in at No. 2 with a 1,360 percent increase, and molten chocolate cake at No. 3 with 1,350 percent. Brussel sprouts even made the list at No. 5, and pesto cavatappi at No. 11. And then there’s the aforementioned fried fish sandwich at No. 8; the sandwich saw a 1,030 percent increase. But likely the most interesting item on the list is “DIY.” “Make Your Own Pizza” not only ranked as one of the top items ordered this year, but “Create Your Own Sushi Roll” saw the biggest spike in popularity for sushi orders with a 902 percent in crease in the number of orders since 2018. Hey, we know what we want, and we’ll order exactly what we want — even if that means getting pasta delivered to our front door.
The report also includes stats on the DoorDash customer, including the fact that someone spent more than $5,200 on one single alcohol order, containing strictly bottle of cognac. Another customer spent nearly $3,000 on one order that contained a motley crew of dishes, including smoked ribbed tip mac and cheese, crab fried rice, curry cornbread, and more.
