In light of the release of his new album, The Lockdown Sessions, the star has collaborated with the biggest names in music including Nicki Minaj and Stevie Wonder. But in terms of his long-awaited and postponed tour the delays seem to keep on coming. One of these delays occurred in New Zealand when the star suddenly contracted walking pneumonia, cutting his concert short and cancelling two others.
The 74-year-old who has not had the best health track record, suffered a massive blunder on stage when he completely lost his voice half-way through his set.
Performing in Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium back in early 2020 he told the crowd at the time: “I’ve just completely lost my voice. I can’t sing. I’ve got to go. I’m sorry.”
Bitterly disappointed Elton was seen in tears leaning over his piano and shaking his head. Supportive fans stood for the singer as he was guided off stage.
Later the star Tweeted with more information about his concerning health condition.
Typically symptoms are mild, and do not require hospitalisation with individuals commonly feeling like they have a common cold.
However, the condition can still make you miserable. With symptoms like a cough, chest pain, mild chills and headache.
The reason it is known as “walking” pneumonia is connected to the fact that the best path to recovery is taking good care of yourself and getting some rest.
The Mayo Clinic further describes that walking pneumonia is often caused by a type of bacterium that produces milder symptoms which come on more gradually than other types of pneumonia.
For young children especially, the condition is often caught when they are at school and spreads around a family in the coming weeks.
Elton was able to recover from the condition and returned for shows in Australia.
Taking the stage in Melbourne he later thanked fans on Instagram. He said: “Melbourne, your love and energy was the best remedy after a tough week. You lifted me up so much, thank you!! Can’t wait for more tonight in Coffs Harbour.”
Loyal followers and fans were delighted to see the star back with one commenting on the post: “Nothing makes me happier than to see you healthy and performing again. Be well, Sir Elton. We love you.”

Talking about the condition Dr Albert Rizzo, medical advisor of the American Lung Association said: “If you have the symptoms listed above, even if mild, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.“In addition, it’s important to get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids and take fever-reducing medicine if you have a fever.
“Recovery time will vary from person to person and will depend on whether you have other medical problems, such as asthma or COPD. Too slow of a pace of recovery and certainly any worsening of symptoms is information you should share with your doctor.”
The American Lung Association also provides some tips to help individuals reduce their risk of infection. These include:
- Get a flu vaccine each year to help prevent getting pneumonia caused by the flu.
- Talk to your doctor about getting a pneumonia vaccine (there is no vaccine for viral or mycoplasma pneumonia, but certain individuals should get vaccinated for pneumococcal pneumonia).
- Exercise, eat a well-balanced diet and get adequate sleep.
- Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with warm, soapy water.
- Don’t smoke.
- Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and encourage others to as well to help prevent spread of these infections.
