Legally Blonde, House on Haunted Hill, Obsessed, Final Destination, Varsity Blues — yes, they’re some of our favorite ’90s and ’00s movies, but what else do they have in common? They all star Ali Larter, of course. The megastar is now a mother to two children, Vivienne and Theodore, is a cookbook author and continues to kick ass on the big screen.
We recently had the opportunity to talk with Larter about all things food, and not only did she share a pic of what’s inside her fridge with us, but we also chatted about her former costar and current sexiest man alive, Idris Elba.
SheKnows: Tell us a little bit about what’s in your fridge.
Ali Larter: I love when my fridge is freshly stocked. I typically purchase my fresh veggies and go-to staples weekly, and I try to buy my protein a couple times a week as needed. I always have bowls of fresh fruit depending on what is in season, and I like to keep my herbs in little vases to help them last longer. Plus, I think it helps brighten up the fridge.
SK: What about your freezer?
AL: We freeze bananas as a quick treat and to make creamy “ice cream.” There are also tons of frozen mango and wild blueberries for smoothies or to put on top my kids’ cereal and yogurt. We all love frozen cauliflower dough to make pizza and, of course, chicken nuggets — always!
SK: Are there any items that you always make sure to keep in stock?
AL: I keep Gruyère and other yummy cheeses for making fondue or homemade mac and cheese. Both are great dishes to easily pull together for a last-minute gathering with friends or family. I also always keep a bottle of Meiomi’s new sparkling wine and some caviar in the fridge — just in case you need an excuse to celebrate.
SK: What’s your go-to healthy snack?
AL: I try to make an artichoke lentil salad or a chicken salad to have in the fridge for snacks or lunches all week. We eat a lot of turkey pepperoni on Dave’s Killer Bread. I also make almond meal muffins because my daughter and I both get low blood sugar, and they are a great way to get the energy we need. I love to warm them up and slather them with a little Earth Balance butter.
SK: What about snacks for Vivienne and Theodore?
AL: Vivienne loves her frozen bananas! And Teddy likes spicy salsa with Red Hot Blues tortilla chips. My kids also eat a ton of Persian cucumbers, nut crackers and apples.
SK: Can you give us an example of one of your favorite weeknight meals?
AL: Turkey chili and meatloaf are staples. My last-minute dish for the kids is whole-grain pasta boiled with broccoli. Then I mix in olive oil, a dab of butter and Parmesan cheese. I try to get all the nutrients in one bowl.
SK: What a great way to sneak veggies in! What would you consider the ultimate comfort food?
AL: Bolognese ragu with polenta. Pop open a bottle of Meiomi wine to pair alongside, and I am in heaven!
SK: Any foods you absolutely can’t stand?
AL: Sprouts!
SK: Your former costar, Idris Elba, was recently named sexiest man alive by People magazine. If you were to cook one meal for him, what would you cook and why?
AL: Steak au poivre. Because he deserves it!
