My name is BreYajiah Curry (@_jerrseyyy), and I’m 22 years old. I live in Knoxville, Tennessee, and I’m an emergency medical technician. By going keto, then switching to a less restrictive low-carb diet, and lifting weights, I’ve lost 80 pounds in 10 months.
My weight-loss journey has been on and off since 2017. I stopped focusing on myself and my health. In 2018, I barely worked out (maybe once every other three weeks.) I was eating really unhealthy foods.
Then in 2018-2019, I became pregnant and developed gestational diabetes. Going into 2020, I became depressed, discouraged, angry, and displeased with myself. After giving birth to my son at 21, I hit my heaviest weight of 255 pounds.
My knees would buckle back like someone just drop-kicked me. They ached, and it was hard to even stand for longer than 20 minutes. I realized that I was taking all of those emotions out onto my family, being selfish and taking things for granted.
I had started following Chancie Rae on Instagram and saw she had been drinking ketones. I expected it to be a scam, but I finally broke down and purchased a box.
I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. My first box of ketones arrived on May 4, 2020, and I instantly mixed them and drank them! They really helped kickstart other healthy habits. I started waking up before the sun and started meal prepping. I made a goal for myself to reach 165 pounds.

At first I was dedicated to a fairly strict keto diet. However, I eventually realized I was never full.
So, I decided to implement an eating style based on low-carb and keto foods instead of being on a strict keto diet.

I also used a macro calculator. I started to incorporate whole grains and a few starches. I noticed the only thing that would keep me constantly full and dropping a few pounds each day was actually weighing my foods to their serving sizes. I ate a lot of chicken, Brussels sprouts, zucchini, cauliflower, and other veggies.

Here’s what I eat in a day now.
- Breakfast: Two to three eggs
- Lunch: Chicken, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and other sautéed veggies
- Snacks: Cheese, Quest protein chips
- Dinner: Ground beef with sautéed veggies or salad
- Dessert: Fruits with coconut whipped cream or homemade peanut butter whipped cream

I also started working out right away. At first I did workouts at home, but then I started getting back into the gym setting.
Once I started going back to the gym, I realized how much I missed it.

I decided to do the 75 Hard Challenge to create a routine for myself and push myself.
The challenge is a “mental toughness” challenge created by podcaster Andy Frisella, and it gained a lot of traction on TikTok. It involves being active for 45 minutes twice a day for 75 days, among other things. It’s super tough and not for everyone (definitely check in with your doctor before trying it), but helped me get back into a routine around fitness.

A typical workout week for me is getting up at 4:45-5 am and being at the gym by 5:30 a.m., where I work out until 7:20 a.m. I do everything from cardio to weights (I’m a big fan of jump rope.) And I have fallen in love with weight lifting. I love my morning routines. It starts my day and allows me to go breathe, relax, and wake up!
These three changes made the biggest difference in my weight-loss results.
- I totally changed my eating habits. I changed my habits for eating first. I started drinking more water (half my body weight in ounces). I fell in love with cooking random recipes and seeing what I could make from scratch. I learned to love the healthier foods and not crave the sugary foods!

- I accepted that I needed to work on patience. Time and patience are key. In order for success to happen, you have to sit back, observe, make a decision and execute that goal. It takes a lot of trials and a lot of errors. The more people who told me I couldn’t or I wouldn’t pushed me to strive even harder! I’ve learned to not want things NOW. I’ve learned to patiently wait for things to happen.

- I started saying affirmations to myself. I learned to become truthful with myself. I stopped being that mean girl and stopped wishing my life to be like others’! I started to write down how I wanted to view myself and how I wanted others to view me. I started to sit down and meditate. It started opening my eyes and mindset.

Don’t give up hope and don’t get discouraged. It may not happen as fast as you expect it to happen. But in order to overcome that fear, you constantly need to kick it to the curb and step out of your comfort zone! Do it for you. Do it for your health. Do it to shine your bright light.
