The world is a strange place right now, and being inside all the time means that we’ve been missing out on some of our favorite foods. That means that, though the thought of navigating IKEA‘s crowded aisles and parking lot isn’t exactly something we miss, we do long for their food court, and more than once we’ve found ourselves wishing we’d stocked up on their frozen Swedish meatballs the last time we were at the store. It’s hard not knowing when we can eat that Swedish specialty again, and IKEA seems to have sensed our stress, because they’ve given us a true culinary gift: they’ve released the official IKEA Swedish meatball recipe.
Lorena Lourido, the country food manager of IKEA UK and Ireland, said in a press release that “We know that some people might be missing our meatballs, which is why we’ve released an at-home alternative which, using easily accessible ingredients, will help those looking for some inspiration in the kitchen.” The move is bound to be even more popular than the LACK side table.
The meatballs don’t take any fancy or exotic ingredients to prepare. You’ll need ground beef and pork, with onions, garlic, salt, and pepper for seasoning. The creamy sauce is pretty simple too – it’s made with veggie and beef stock, cream, butter, and flour, getting a kick from the surprising additions of soy sauce and Dijon mustard.
You will need to plan ahead – after being shaped, the meatballs need to be refrigerated for a couple of hours so they don’t fall apart while they’re frying. But these days, working from home makes this type of planning ahead a little easier. Pop the meatballs in the fridge during lunch, get back to work, and then cook them up for dinner later in the evening.
If you’re lucky enough to have a well-stocked grocery store nearby, or if you’ve been good about keeping your fridge and pantry full, there’s no reason why you couldn’t go from zero to full Swedish feast in a few hours now that you’ve got IKEA’s meatball recipe in hand.
