We’re always on the lookout for new recipes from Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa herself, whether that means scouring cookbooks and magazines for a mention or watching hours of cooking shows in hopes of catching a glimpse of our culinary hero. One place we never thought to look for a Garten recipe, however, is in the pages of a children’s book, but all that’s about to change.
That’s because Garten’s recipe for potato latkes is featured in a just-released children’s book called Goodnight Bubbala, written by Sheryl Haft and illustrated by Jill Weber.
The book is a “joyful parody” of the children’s classic Goodnight Moon. This version features a Jewish family gathering in the bedroom of a little bunny as they celebrate the holidays together.
Food features prominently in the illustrations and text, and the back of the book features an exclusive latke recipe from Garten, who is friends with the author.
The Amazon preview for the book shows that Garten’s recipe is fairly standard. It calls for grated onion, grated potatoes, eggs, flour, salt and pepper. The potatoes and onions are rolled in a kitchen towel after being grated to remove any extra moisture, and then the patties are mixed with egg, flour, and seasoning. The latkes are fried in a mixture of butter and olive oil, and Garten recommends serving them with sour cream or applesauce.
We haven’t been this hungry after reading a children’s book since the first time we read Strega Nona and got a decades-long craving for a never-ending pot of spaghetti!
Goodnight Bubbala was released on October 15th, and is already the #1 Best Seller in the Children’s Jewish Holiday Books category on Amazon. Pick up a copy, read it to your kids, and then make latkes together just like Ina.
