Working out has a number of amazing benefits for your health, but have you ever thought about how it’s affecting your skin?
Here are seven things that happen, and how to deal with them…
1. You get the red-in-the-face look
Flushed skin after exercise is caused by blood vessels dilating to release heat, and this is completely normal. Some people get more flushed than others, this is because their blood vessels are closer to the surface of the skin and not a sign of fitness!
2. Cardio increases circulation and nutrients in your skin
When you go for a good run, your blood circulation improves, increasing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to your skin. This can give you an after-workout glow and healthy skin!
3. Doing frequent high-intensity workouts can age your skin
Studies suggests that frequent intense exercise can cause increased production of free radicals that cause ageing. However, a healthy diet of greens and antioxidants can combat these effects.
4. You lose hydration in your skin
You might not think to condition it, but your skin can lose up to 1 litre of water in a 45 min workout. Dehydrated skin can cause skin cells to die and lead to ageing affects. To prevent this from occurring, look for a moisturiser with hyaluronic acid that locks in hydration and strengthens the skins moisture barrier, such as Clinique’s Moisture Surge Hydrating Supercharged Concentrate.
5. Exercising outside frequently can increase your chances of skin cancer
Sun exposure increases your chance of skin cancer, especially on high UV rating days. But there are prevention methods, like always wearing sunscreen, covering exposed skin with clothes and wearing a hat.
6. You can get skin chafing
There are many areas that can be affected by friction burns, such as under your arms or between your legs from shaving, plus in the breast area for women with large busts. Finding the appropriate activewear can help with this aspect.
7. You can get breakouts if you don’t wash sweat off ASAP
If you don’t wash your face after a workout, it can oxidise which can cause blackheads. However if you give your face a quick cleanse soon afterwards, this can prevent breakouts. Also try to avoid wearing makeup during a workout, which can clog pores.
