One of the most important factors in determining whether an EPR system, or other large software project in a hospital, succeeds is successful user adoption or utilisation.
Clinicians are expected to master the user interface and new workflows of an EPR system following training. However, studies show that following initial training, retention rates can drop by up to 70% within just 24 hours.
Constraints on training teams and clinical users mean that training content cannot be absorbed quickly enough for most users to become proficient from day one. This can lead to factors that cause clinical risk.
Previously, there was no clear alternative to instructor-led training when inducting new staff or preparing existing clinicians for major system changes, taking them away once more from their patients. Now new technology is being harnessed to help users learn new systems while they work.

Deploying a major healthcare IT system is a significant undertaking, so it is important to deliver training and knowledge to users as they need it. Hospitals report that staff, who have been through traditional training sessions, may still struggle to use IT systems on a day-to-day basis, and that this puts pressure on help-desks or leads to sub-optimal ‘work-arounds’.
