Between eggnog, mulled wine and flutes filled with champagne, many might indulge in festive signature drinks, however, it’s no surprise that alcohol is actually “poison” for your body and might leave you feeling hungover the next day. Alcohol can dehydrate you, put a strain on your liver and create more acid in your blood, Dr Zoe Williams told Express.co.uk. Here are some foods that could help.

Dr Zoe, known for appearing on ITV’s This Morning, has partnered up with a convenience app called Zapp to provide hangover tips to get you through the festive season.

The best foods and drinks the doctor recommended are eggs, bananas and coke.

Eggs and hangover

If your go-to hangover cure is a full English, you’re not alone as Zapp’s research found the popular breakfast to be the top food for fighting hangover for many Brits.

And there’s a scientific reason behind why your body might be craving that greasy egg after a night out.

Dr Zoe explained: “Eggs are kind of like nature’s little hangover remedies because they’ve got so many nutrients in them.

“They’re packed with protein, vitamin D, vitamin B1, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, selenium and zinc.

“But they also contain something called cysteine – an amino acid – that can help break down acetaldehyde.

“Acetaldehyde is one of the worst by-products of alcohol metabolism, so this cysteine can actually help alleviate nausea and headache by helping your body metabolise the alcohol more effectively.”

Bananas

While eggs can help get rid of the unwanted symptoms of a night out like headache and nausea, bananas can boost your low levels of rehydration salts.

Alcohol is a diuretic, which doesn’t only make you pee more but can also leave you dehydrated.

The doctor said: “But something else that you can lose, particularly, if you’re the type of person who’s ended up being sick.

“Your body can lose a lot of its salts as well. Potassium is one of the salts that are in the blood along with things like sodium.”

That’s exactly what makes bananas, packed with this type of salt, a healthy food choice for those who are hungover.

Dr Zoe also reminds people to drink water to keep you from getting dehydrated in the first place. Have a glass between your drinks and before you go to bed, she recommended.

Coke

The famous doctor isn’t usually an advocate of Coke, however, being hungover creates an exception as this popular drink could help.

She noted: “Having low blood sugar can make you feel pretty rotten as well, so that might be why you are craving something that’s going to quickly boost your blood sugar back up, like a full-fat Coke.

“Your body converts that into glucose and uses it as fuel.”

Having that sugar boost can help you feel better, but Dr Zoe also advises pairing the drink with some food, otherwise the effects of Coke can wear off quickly.

While you’re on a night out drinking, don’t forget to hydrate as much as you can, but also to have some food.

“It’s important to eat something before you start drinking and ideally to be nibbling or eating something whilst you’re drinking as well and, ideally, have something before you go to bed,” the doctor said.

Dr Zoe added it’s important to listen to your body. She said: “Generally when you do have a hangover, you often have cravings and it’s not a bad idea to listen to those cravings because they’re giving you an indication of what your body needs.

“Zapp will deliver convenience items, many of which would be on people’s lists of hangover remedies, whether it’s painkillers or that particular food or drink that you’re craving.”

Zapp is an on-demand convenience app that delivers snacks, drinks, essential groceries, and other everyday items to your door within minutes, 24/7. You can order your hangover essentials any time of day and Zapp the hangover away! Zapp can be downloaded via the App store on iOS and Android.
