Had a heavy night last night?

If you’re feeling rough this morning you should probably listen up.

The Daily Star caught up with wine experts to hear their top tips for preventing hangovers.

Obviously there aren’t “magic cures” and there’s only so much water, rest and paracetamol can do – but you can preempt the pain and get ahead of the game the night before.

Dynamic drinks duo Aidy Smith and Helena Nicklin shared their game-changing hacks that should hopefully lessen the blow next time you enjoy a tipple or three.

From supplements, to pacing yourself and following the one glass of water rule, here’s what you need to know…

1. Start your night out with a low-alcohol drink

You wouldn't sprint the first five minutes of a marathon, so resist the urge to go straight in with the heavier stuff.

Last year saw a colossal increase in no and low alcohol drinks – everything from wines and spirits to hard seltzers and beers.

While it’s still a new category, there are some really good quality products you can get your hands on and they are typically cheaper than their alcoholic counterparts.

A great evening is more about the company than what you’re putting in your body, and if you pace yourself from the beginning you’ll likely drink a lot less units throughout the evening and feel a lot better for it the next day!

2. Follow the one glass of water rule

Dehydration is what causes many hangover symptoms.

And it is proven that if you keep hydrated while drinking, you will flush out the toxins and alcohol from your body a lot quicker.

All you need to do is ensure you drink one glass of water in between each alcoholic drink you have.

Not only does it keep you more hydrated but you are able to recognise how much you are drinking and call it a night when your body is telling you it’s time, rather than burning the candle at both ends.

3. Drink less but better

Pace yourself, basically.

Resist the urge to order in a load of cheap shots that will cost the same as a high quality tipple.

If you're sloshing drinks back because you hate the taste, pick something quality that you want to savour instead.

Knowing you have a limited amount of it will make you pace yourself and focus on the night itself versus constantly topping up the glass.

It’s better to drink less of what you really enjoy than fill your body with extra toxins from a drink that doesn’t mean much to you!

Like what you see? Then fill your boots…

4. Arm yourself with a hangover supplement

Now, we’re not medical professionals so we can’t claim the effect supplements will have on you, but there have been a lot of research studies done to suggest certain health supplements can lessen the effect of your hangovers.

One worth mentioning is ‘Survivor’, which seems to have received the most hype.

These little red capsules are packed full of ingredients like Ampelopsis grossedentata (vine tea), Pueraria lobata (a flower) and a multitude of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and electrolytes.

They work together to help the liver’s natural detoxification process, reduce inflammation, support the immune system and help maintain energy levels – all of which they claim are backed up by the European Food safety Authority.
