Health officials recall HUNDREDS of faulty tourniquets

HUNDREDS of faulty tourniquets are recalled because they may not stop patients from bleeding to death due to a stitching error

  • But the body made clear that not all of the tourniquets need to be returned

Health officials have issued a recall of scores of faulty tourniquets that may not stop patients from bleeding to death.

First responders and hikers have today been urged to check if they have a SAM XT Extremity Tourniquet.

A problem in the sewing of the gadget may cause the seam holding the buckle to the belt to fail when used to stop blood flow.

Nearly 1,200 of the devices are sold in the UK, according to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

But the body, which polices the safety of medical products, made clear that not all of the tourniquets need to be returned.

John Wilkinson, director of medical devices at the MHRA, urged all affected people to return their SAM XT Extremity Tourniquet.

He said: ‘Check if you have the listed tourniquet and if you do so, please separate the device from your pack and take them back to where you bought them from.

‘Our highest priority is making sure medical devices are safe. 

‘This is why we are supporting the company to carry out this recall and why we want people to check their inventory.

‘As with any medical device, we strongly encourage anyone to report any suspected manufacturing faults to us via our Yellow Card Scheme.’ 

SAM XT Extremity Tourniquet – sold worldwide since March 2017 – aren’t widely used in the UK, but cost in the region of £40. 

The products affected by today’s recall have the lot number XT1812 or higher, or are missing a ‘Box X Stitch’ on the instructions or device.

It comes after the MHRA recalled 200,000 bottles of blackcurrant cough syrups for children sold in supermarkets last month. 

Parents were urged to return any affected own-brand bottles at Tesco, Asda, Wilko, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, amid fears they may contain mould.
