Diabetes is a common condition that affects more than four million people in the UK, and 90 percent of all cases are caused by type 2 diabetes. You could be lower your risk of high blood sugar by regularly drinking cinnamon tea, it’s been claimed.

Type 2 diabetes could be caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin.

Without enough of the hormone, the body struggles to convert sugar in the blood into usable energy.

Making some changes to your daily diet is one of the easiest ways to manage your blood sugar levels.

Adding cinnamon to your morning hot drink may help diabetes patients to control their blood sugar levels, according to Natures Aid nutritionist Jenny Logan.

Cinnamon helps insulin to provide the body’s cells with enough energy.

Just three grams of cinnamon every day has been claimed to stabilise blood sugar levels.

But you should always speak to a doctor before adding any new food supplement to your diabetes treatment routine.

“Cinnamon is a common food cupboard ingredient which may be of interest to those who wish to support healthy blood glucose levels,” said Logan.

She told Express Health: “There has been a lot of research carried out which has shown that cinnamon could help to support the action of insulin and may even help to support healthy blood glucose levels. The doses used in these studies vary between one to three grams per day.

“Obviously, if someone is looking to add cinnamon to their diet with healthy blood sugar in mind, it would not be helpful to do so in the form of apple pies and cinnamon rolls!

That said, cinnamon can easily be added to a hot drink or taken as a handy food supplement.”

Diabetes patients could lower their fasting blood sugar levels by as much as 29 percent by adding more cinnamon to their diet, dietitians have claimed.

Adding more cinnamon to your diet could also lower your risk of heart disease.

The spice helps to lower the amount of cholesterol in the body.

Cinnamon may also help to lower blood pressure, in hypertension patients.

Many people may have diabetes without even knowing it, because the signs and symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.

Common diabetes symptoms include having cuts or wounds that take longer to heal, having an unquenchable thirst, and passing more urine than normal.

You should speak to a doctor if you’re worried about the warning signs or symptoms of diabetes, or if you think you may be at risk.

Diagnosing the condition early is very important, because patients are more at risk of some deadly complications, including heart disease and strokes.
