CAN YOU RUN UP THE STAIRS?

I can. Things got quite tough before I had resurfacing surgery on my right hip in January. It wasn’t that I couldn’t run, more that I couldn’t run without pain. Since having the op I have zero pain and it feels great.

GET YOUR FIVE A DAY?

Yes. I have fruit and vegetables throughout the day. My favourites are broccoli and mushrooms. I avoid high-sugar fruit like melon and mango.

EVER DIETED?

I’ve tried a few diets over the years for performance reasons, rather than weight loss.

Recently, I was told that gluten-free diets can reduce inflammation in the body. With everything that was going on with my injury, it seemed worth a try.

ANY VICES?

I love chocolate biscuits, particularly the milk chocolate Leibniz ones.

ANY FAMILY AILMENTS?

Thankfully none.

WORST ILLNESS /INJURY?

The issues with my hip — it’s been a difficult one to get to the bottom of. The problems began when I was about 22 or 23 and worsened as I played more and more tennis.

POP ANY PILLS?

I recently started using TRR Active, a liquid supplement, as it contains marine collagen, which is supposed to be good for bone and joint health.

EVER HAVE PLASTIC SURGERY?

No.

COPE WELL WITH PAIN?

Pretty well, I think. I’ve always tried to push myself as hard as I can on court and in the gym, and to do that you need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. However, at the French Open in 2017 the pain was so bad it stopped me playing at my best. During that period I tried so many ways to manage it — injections, anti-inflammatories, different procedures — but nothing sorted it.

TRIED ALTERNATIVE REMEDIES?

I’m pretty big on research, so unless something is tried, tested and proven, I’m usually pretty sceptical.

ANY PHOBIAS?

Not really. Any fears I have, I try to use as motivators. If someone tells me something is difficult, I look at that as a challenge.

WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE AT NIGHT?

I’m a really good sleeper. I miss my family when I travel, so I try to FaceTime them most days. As long as I’ve spoken to them and know everyone is happy, I’m happy.

LIKE TO LIVE FOR EVER?

It would be nice to carry on playing tennis for as long as I wanted. I’d prefer that to living for ever.
