It’s often easy to forget amongst the glitz and glamour of Hollywood – but celebrities are normal people, just like you or I. They go through heartbreaks, and unlike us, these breakups often happen under the watchful eye of the paparazzi, gossip magazines and speculating fans.
Needless to say, celebrity breakups are tough.

1. Rihanna
Last week, Rihanna responded to a fan’s Instagram DM to coach him through a recent breakup…and her advice was *too real*
2. Emma Stone
In a 2012 interview, La La Land leading lady Emma Stone opened up about her first heartbreak, explaining: “I was crawling on the floor. I remember throwing up. I remember being on the floor… I have never felt anything quite like that. It was so visceral. It’s like someone has killed you and you have to live through it and watch it happen. It was awful.”
3. Kate Moss
Once upon a time, a 90s Kate Moss and Johnny Depp were star-crossed lovers, and the envy of many when they dated for four years. In 2012, Moss told Vanity Fair that: “There’s nobody that’s ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said. Like if I said, ‘What do I do?’, he’d tell me. And that’s what I missed when I left. I really lose that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears!”
4. Taylor Swift
Anyone who’s ever listened to Taylor Swift’s music knows that she is no stranger to heartbreak. In an interview with Vogue, the ‘Bad Blood’ singer revealed: “There’s just been this earth-shattering, not recent, but absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak, and that will turn out to be what the next album is about. The only way that I can feel better about myself – pull myself out of that awful pain of losing someone – is writing songs about it to get some sort of clarity.”
5. Jennifer Aniston
If you’re anything like us, your heart still hasn’t healed from Jen and Brad’s breakup in 2005. Of the infamous split, Aniston explained: “You don’t want to feel that when a marriage ends, your life is over. Compared to what other people are surviving out there in the world, this is not so bad, in the grand scheme of things…But shit happens. You hoke and say ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’.” Words of wisdom.
6. Kim Kardashian West
Even though their marriage lasted on 72 days, Kim Kardashian West still suffered after her breakup from ex-husband Kris Humphries: “I felt like I was on a fast roller coaster and couldn’t get off when now I know I probably should have… I never had the intention of hurting anybody and I accept full responsibility for my actions and decisions, and for taking everyone on this journey with me. It just didn’t turn out to be the fairy tale I had so badly hoped for.”
During a recent appearance on ‘Plead the Fifth’, Kim told host Andy Cohen that she realised the marriage wasn’t going to work as early on as the honeymoon. Ouch.
7. Katy Perry
In 2013, the ‘Roar’ singer spoke out about her very public divorce from funny-man and husband of one-year, Russell Brand: “I was in bed for about two weeks. I was pretty f**ked, yes. It hurt a lot – I got a good knock.”

8. Nicole Kidman
Before Nicole was happily loved-up with Keith Urban, the Aussie actress was married to – and had kids with – Tom Cruise. Of the breakup, she explained: “I’m not sure what the future holds, but I do know that I’m going to be positive and not wake up feeling desperate. As my dad said, ‘Nic, it is what it is, it’s not what it should have been, not what it could have been, it is what it is’.”
9. Jennifer Garner
In a tell-all interview with Vanity Fair following her divorce from husband Ben Affleck, Garner laughed: “It’s been a year of wine!”, before revealing that: “When I can’t sleep – and I am not someone who typically has that problem, but I really have in the last year – and I need something to switch my brain off, it has been Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. God bless those girls” – now that’s some breakup advice we can get around!
Garner also explained that her daughter, Violet, was helping her through the divorce: “I’m happy to have her; she’s happy to have me.”
