Pinworm is a parasite infection. It is a worldwide problem that most commonly affects children and teens. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that anyone who has symptoms, which most often include itchiness around the anus (where bowel movements leave your body), should see their health care provider to confirm that the symptoms are in fact due to pinworm and not something else.
Treatment for pinworm can be either an over-the-counter medicine (Pyrantel pamoate) or prescription medicine (Mebendazole or albendazole). Each medicine requires that you take another dose 2 weeks later (to prevent reinfection). Anyone else that lives in your home should be treated at the same time too. It’s very important to wash your hands many times a day, especially after using the toilet or touching/scratching your anus to prevent reinfection.
