Serena Williams has always been a wonderful woman to follow. She's a fierce athlete, for one, and she's mesmerizing to watch on the court (even while pregnant). Williams is also not afraid to speak out about what she believes in and has been an advocate for gender equality. She is also incredibly relatable and loves to shop at Target (though she makes a point to only buy from brands that feature women who look like her), and now, she's speaking out about body image and how things change after having a baby.
In an interview with Byrdie's The Thirty, Williams talked again about her fraught birth experience and unplanned C-section. She went on to open up about the expectations often placed on women to "snap back" after giving birth, saying, "I feel like the quote, unquote 'snapback' is so overrated. I’m still snapping back."

She then continued, telling Byrdie, "I was playing in Wimbledon, and I totally have a stomach. You know? It’s no secret. It is what it is. And I’m proud of my tummy. It pokes out a lot more than it used to, but I’m still coming back from having a baby. I just feel like this whole story about having a baby and then coming back two days after and looking better than before is not teaching the right way or the natural way or the believable way. Like maybe that happened to one person, but let me tell you, that didn’t happen to me. "
As always, her honesty is refreshing, and likely exactly what many other new moms need to hear right now.
