About Salmonella
This isn’t the first dog food recall we’ve had to warn you about. Unfortunately, Salmonella poses a serious threat to the public’s health–and this includes our pets! A bacterial infection that can live in the intestinal tracts of humans and animals, more than 1 million infections are reported to the CDC each year. Salmonella can cause death if not treated.
About Listeria monocytogenes
Like Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious illness. It differs from other infectious bacteria, however, in that it is able to thrive on common surfaces and can do so even in cold temperatures…making it even more contagious! Typically found in livestock, Listeria monocytogenes can also be found in soil and water.
Signs and Symptoms
Please note that some animals can be carriers of Salmonella or Listeria monocytogenes without showing any physical signs or symptoms of infection. And even without obvious symptoms, these animals can infect humans and other pets. In those who do appear sick, some of the most prevalent symptoms include:
- Abdominal cramping
- Diarrhea (including bloody diarrhea)
- Fever
- Nausea
- Painful and/or frequent urination
- Blood in urine
- Vomiting
- Muscle pain
- Arterial infections
- Arthritis
- Eye irritation
- Heart infection
