Lady Gaga has pulled back the curtain on her lowest moments in life, including her long-term battle with chronic pain.
The upcoming Netflix documentary, Five Foot Two, follows the popstar for a full year as she navigates her way through the highs and lows of fame.
But it’s the scenes that show the 31-year-old facing up to her health problems that are the most confronting.
“It’s hard,” she said of her struggles at a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival. “But it’s liberating too.”
“There is an element and a very strong piece of me that believes pain is a microphone. My pain does me no good unless I transform it into something that is [good].”
“I hope that people watching it that do struggle with chronic pain know that they are not alone,” she continued.
The Poker Face artist also addressed those who may be sceptical of her suffering.
“It’s freeing for me because there’s a degree of self-deprecation and shame that goes along with feeling in pain a lot,” she said.
“I want people that watch it that think there’s no way I live that way because they see me dance and sing, to know I struggle with things like them and that I work through it and it can be done.”
“We have to stick together,” she added,” and I don’t have to hide it because it’s weak.”
In a teaser for the documentary, Gaga can be seen seeking medical treatment for a debilitating hip injury and receiving injections on a surgical table.
This comes more than a year after the singer first revealed that her chronic pain was also related to a sexual assault.
“I feel physical pain,” she confessed during a radio interview.
“I actually suffer from chronic pain and it’s from this paralysing fear that I’ve experienced for almost 10 years.
“When something traumatic happens, your brain disconnects so that it can handle it. But, it stays in your body, in your tissues, physically in you.”
Back in 2013, Gaga also underwent surgery on her hip, which resulted in her cancelling the remainder of her Born This Way Ball tour.
Five Foot Two will premiere on Netflix on Sept. 22.
