Get prepped wellness-world, ghee is about to rock your culinary world. But unlike turmeric lattes, chia puddings and kale chips, this superfood isn’t just next level nutritious, it’s also v versatile.
In short: ghee is a type of healthy fat that’s used as a substitute for butter and oil. It’s been a staple in Indian cooking for centuries and is made by heating butter, skimming the solids off the top and leaving the water to evaporate.
The result? A rich, nutty-tasting, golden-coloured, easily digestible paste that’s jam-packed with vitamins A, D, and K (which are great for the immune system and boosting brain function).
It’s much lower in cholesterol than regular butter and has a relatively high smoke point, meaning it can tolerate high cooking temperatures (like in baking and sautéing) without burning. And good news for all the dairy-intolerant peeps among us: ghee is totally lactose and casein-free. Plus, it has a shelf-life of up to 100 years and doesn’t require refrigeration. Win.
But as if you needed another reason to stock up; it’s also received the celeb seal of approval by none other than health-nut Kourtney Kardashian.
“Ghee is the first thing I put in my body every morning,” the reality star wrote on her website.
“I take one big teaspoon of ghee every morning and melt it on the stove in a pan and drink it out of a cute little ceramic white cup. After I take it, I don’t eat anything for 20 minutes, and then I drink a glass of water before eating food. “
She continued: “In my kitchen, I only cook with ghee and coconut oil, and try to incorporate it into my meals as much as possible. We make French toast, grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas, basically anything with ghee.”
Yeaahhhh considering she’s 38 and in the best shape of her life, we’ll have what she’s having.
