It looks like Shay Mitchell is officially a member of the “swollen foot club,” according to her latest Instagram story.
The 32-year-old Pretty Little Liars actress recently announced that she’s six months pregnant with her first child with boyfriend Matte Babel. And now she’s posting hilarious videos to her Instagram Stories showing off an all-too-common pregnancy side effect: swollen feet. (Jessica Simpson also posted about her super swollen feet during her recent pregnancy with her daughter Birdie.)
In Shay’s video, she’s basically freaking out as she shows off her puffy feet indented with marks from her strappy sandals.
“Okay so either Alana tied up my shoes too tight, or I’ve just become a member of the swollen foot crew. Oh my gosh,” she wails in the video (along with a hilarious meme of the iconic Kim Kardashian crying face).
She also put a poll for her followers to vote about the “cause” behind her swelling.
Later in the video, she shares that her foot swelling went down—just in time for her to have to put her shoes back on again.
Turns out, swollen feet are actually super common during pregnancy. Christine Greves, MD, a board-certified ob/gyn, previously told Women’s Health that the swelling happens because of extra fluid retention, hormonal changes, and pressure from your uterus on your veins, which impairs the return of blood to your heart.
In rare cases, swollen feet could also be a sign of the potentially fatal pregnancy complication called preeclampsia, which also comes with symptoms like high blood pressure, headaches, blurred vision, and upper abdominal pain, per the National Institutes of Health. (So if your swollen feet are paired with other concerning symptoms—don’t just write it off.)
Propping your feet up with pillows while you sleep, avoiding standing for long periods of time, resting or sleeping on your left side, and wearing compression stockings or support hose can all help the swelling go down.
So yep…time to bust out those compression hose, Shay!
